Reeder for Mac

Reeder for Mac was released this week and I’m happy to report that it’s a thing of pure beauty if you haven’t already, download it here. This is really the first mac application I have seen that marries both the OS X and iOS interfaces, perfectly, it’s heavy iOS inspired but still manages to feel at home in it’s OS X surroundings.

When Apple announced that they were going to bring some of the innovations in mobile interface design “back to the mac” with the release of 10.7 I was unsure about the whole concept, but after some hands on time with an application like Reeder I’m excited to see what Apple has in store for 10.7 Lion.

Recently I’ve been looking at ways to backup some of my documents and photos online. There’s a number of options out there, dropbox .mac and backblaze to name a few but it seemed a little crazy to shell out cash for someone to host my files on a server when I’m already paying web hosts to do exactly the same thing. I needed a way to sync files over ftp and it needed to be automated.

I opened up my favorite ftp client, Panic’s Trasmit and couldn’t for the life of me work out how to automate folder syncing. After some googling I still found nothing so I fired off an e-mail to Panic. They came back with the solution which works perfectly

1. Open Automator (located in your Applications folder). You will be asked what template you want to use for your workflow. Choose “iCal Alarm”.

2. In Automator’s “Library” on the left side of the window, click “Internet”. There, you will find Transmit’s “Upload”, “Download” and “Synchronize” actions. Drag the action(s) you need into your worklow and configure.

3. Save your workflow. iCal will be launched automatically and you can choose when and how often you want the task to run.

Farewell Boagworld Podcast

If you have never heard of Boagworld before now I’m afraid that you have missed out, the weekly podcast was one of my main sources of web related news. Recently I have dropped behind a couple of episode so have only just found out that the show has been cancelled. Its a massive shame but I’m sure they had their reasons, so I guess it’s time to move on. So far my replacements are The Sitepoint Podcast and The Big Web Show both are doing a brilliant job of filling the whole that Boagworld left behind R.I.P Boagworld Podcast.

As for the death grip, the official fix is still to just buy a bumper (which reportedly doesn’t work as well as Apple would hope) or, as Big Steve says, ‘hold it differently’. I’m gonna start holding phones upside down. Start a trend. It’ll be like playing on Expert Mode, and I just kind of have to guess what the other guy’s saying. ‘Sorry, Dave, I couldn’t make the funeral, I didn’t get your directions clearly. My phone was upside down.’ But my signal will be totally 4G, so whatever. Problem solved.

Imagine the headaches Microsoft would get rid of by using WebKit. No longer could we blame IE for our development headaches. We could test a site in IE, Chrome or Safari and there is a good chance if it works in one that it will work in the other two. That sounds like bliss to me.

There’s one point I’d like to add to this argument: Standardizing on a rendering engine such as WebKit does not mean innovation has to be stifled. Chrome uses WebKit and still has plenty of differentiation with Safari. Its V8 Javascript engine, for one, is entirely custom and known for its remarkable performance. Browsers like IE and Firefox could learn something here — what if IE were to take a build of WebKit, build in Silverlight, and make great use of it in the browser’s default pages?

I realize that WebKit isn’t perfect and there are way too many versions of it out there, but still, as I’ve mentioned before — it’s an open source project working against a standard. It’s used for over 90% of mobile browsing (or will be soon). Browser makers like Microsoft and Mozilla should swallow their pride, take the unique features they’ve each brought to their respective browsers, and start figuring out how to develop them on top of WebKit — it’s the quickest way for web development to move forward as a whole.

I was watching Netflix on my iPad while preparing dinner. I had it propped up on the stand that comes with the Incase Neoprene Sleeve Plus. Just to be clear, the “Plus” stands for “Plus it comes with a free stand that doesn’t work”. So I’m watching 30 Rock as I wash some dishes and as I do I watch it suddenly lean back, slip from the stand, and fall flat on it’s face with the episode still playing. I pick it up, turn it around, and see a spiderweb of sizeable cracks in my iPad’s display.

I’ll find out tomorrow if my warranty covers accessory sabotage.

Jquery: Novice to Ninja, first impressions

I’m currently learning jQuery with the help of the new book from Sitepoint novice to ninja. I’m loving the book so far and it’s definitely helping me understand the world of jQuery but as a complete noob to this library I’m finding the the book is skipping over some of the basics.

For example I have just started to animate a nice navigation menu using CSS Properties, the book uses this code

$(‘#navigation li’).hover(function(){
$(this).animate({paddingLeft: ‘+=15px’}, 200);}, function() {
$(this).animate({paddingLeft: ‘-=15px’}, 200);
});

Which is great I type it in and the animation works without a hitch but my issue is that they don’t explain how the hover function works. Sure I can read the code above and understand it to a degree but it wasn’t till I installed the jQuery sugar plugin which autofills some of the code that I really understood what was going on. if I type $(this).hover into Espresso with sugar installed these options appear.

$(this).hover(over, out)

Ok, so now I can make sense of the above, the first statement is for hover over and the second is for hover out. Shouldn’t things like this be covered in the book? Don’t get me wrong the book is a great way to start learning and using jQuery I’m only 80 pages in and have definitely developed a deeper understanding for the library, I’m just struggling a little with how to layout my code.

So to anyone that it currently trying to learn jQuery with this book I would recommend installing jQuery.sugar for Espresso or another sort of autofill plugin, it’s helped heaps.
